COPENHAGEN: Population and climate change are intertwined but the population issue has remained a blind spot when countries discuss ways to mitigate climate change and slow down global warming, according to Zhao Baige, vice-minister of National Population and Family Planning Commission of China (NPFPC) .
“Dealing with climate change is not simply an issue of CO2 emission reduction but a comprehensive challenge involving political, economic, social, cultural and ecological issues, and the population concern fits right into the picture,” said Zhao, who is a member of the Chinese government delegation.
Many studies link population growth with emissions and the effect of climate change.
“Calculations of the contribution of population growth to emissions growth globally produce a consistent finding that most of past population growth has been responsible for between 40 per cent and 60 percent of emissions growth,” so stated by the 2009 State of World Population, released earlier by the UN Population Fund.
Although China’s family planning policy has received criticism over the past three decades, Zhao said that China’s population program has made a great historic contribution to the well-being of society.
As a result of the family planning policy, China has seen 400 million fewer births, which has resulted in 18 million fewer tons of CO2 emissions a year, Zhao said.

Mom Who Watches Neighborhood Kids Before Bus Run Is Running Illegal Day Care
By TAHMAN BRADLEY
DETROIT, Sept. 30, 2009
Lisa Snyder, a stay-at-home mom in rural Michigan, says she was doing her neighbors a favor by watching their kids for about 20 to 30 minutes each morning before the school bus arrived.
One by one each morning a different group of kids would arrive at her Middleville, Mich., house to wait with her 7-year-old daughter for the bus’ arrival. Snyder, 35, couldn’t have envisioned that her act of charity could possibly land her in jail.
But earlier this month, just days after the start of the school year, Snyder received a letter from the Michigan Department of Human Services warning that if she continued to watch neighbor’s kids at her home, she would be engaging in illegal child care and face penalties, possibly even jail time.
“I was freaked out,” Snyder told ABC News. “I called my husband and all the other parents. I’ve never done anything wrong in my entire life.”
Under Michigan law, no one may provide care and supervision for unrelated children in their homes for more than four weeks a year unless they obtain a day-care providers license. Operating an illegal daycare is punishable up to $1,000 in fines and 90 days in jail. It didn’t matter that Synder wasn’t charging the parents or that the so-called day care was only for a few minutes a day.
Snyder said DHS confirmed to her that a neighbor, apparently unhappy over the kids trooping to her door each morning, had called the department to report what she was doing.

LONDON (AP) — Polio, a dreaded paralyzing disease stamped out in the industrialized world, is spreading in Nigeria despite efforts to stamp it out. And health officials say in some cases, it’s caused by the vaccine used to fight it.
In July, the World Health Organization issued a warning that this vaccine-spread virus might extend beyond Africa. So far, 124 Nigerian children have been paralyzed this year — about twice those afflicted in 2008.
The polio problem is just the latest challenge to global health authorities trying to convince wary citizens that vaccines can save them from dreaded disease. For years, myths have abounded about vaccines — that they were the Western world’s plan to sterilize Africans or give them AIDS. The sad polio reality fuels misguided fears and underscores the challenges authorities face using a flawed vaccine.
Nigeria and most other poor nations use an oral polio vaccine because it’s cheaper, easier, and protects entire communities.

In a bombshell finding that has far-reaching implications for society and culture, scientists at the University of Rochester have found that phthalates — the chemical found in many vinyl and plastic products — tends to “feminize” boys, altering their brains to express more feminine characteristics. The study has been published in the Journal of Andrology.
Phthalates are found in vinyl products (including vinyl flooring), PVC shower curtains, plastic furniture and even in the plastic coating of the insides of dishwashing machines.
The feminization process happens during pregnancy when phthalate exposure causes hormone disruptions in the unborn baby. This chemical feminizes males by disrupting the action of the hormone testosterone.
In this recent study, researchers found a strong correlation between the types of toys that male children play with and the level of phthalates found in their mothers when they were pregnant. Researchers discovered that boys exposed to high levels of phthalates in the womb tend to avoid playing with cars, trains or toy guns. They also avoided rough play, instead preferring more feminine toys and activities. (Barbie?)

Beginning Dec. 1, the city of San Francisco will begin enforcing a ban on the sale, distribution and manufacture of baby products that contain any level of the toxic chemical bisphenol A or certain levels of phthalates.
Both chemicals — which are used to harden or soften plastic products — can leach out of the plastic in baby toys and products every time an infant puts it in its mouth, causing possibly severe health problems.
San Francisco’s law is modeled after a ban that went into effect in the European Union earlier this year, after rising concerns over the health consequences of the buildup of industrial chemicals in the human body came to light. For instance, a recent study by Harvard researchers appearing in The Lancet found that hundreds and possibly thousands of common chemicals are causing widespread brain disorders in children.
Many San Francisco companies that manufacture and sell baby products — such as teething rings, dolls and waterproof books — say they will comply with the ban, but find it unnecessary, claiming their products only contain “safe” levels of the hazardous chemicals.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says its decades-old guidelines on “safe” human exposure to the chemicals fail to take into account hundreds of recent studies that link the chemicals with serious health disorders.
