Newspaper Suspended for Showing Quit CCP Slogan on Front Page

A Chinese newspaper was suspended from publication for accidently printing a slogan for quitting the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on its front page, just 2 days before the Oct. 1 National Day.

Many Chinese and foreign media reported that the Jinzhou Nightly newspaper, a newspaper affiliated with the Party Committee of Jinzhou City in China’s Northeastern Liaoning Province, was suspended from publication after a slogan for quitting the CCP, “Heaven Eliminates the CCP, Quit the CCP and its Affiliated Organization and You Will be Blessed,” was found on the front page’s photo of the Sunday, Sep. 27 edition.

One blogger even posted this message on China’s popular Sina Web site, “Shocking: Someone is offering an astronomical price for a copy of a certain edition of the Jinzhou Nightly.”

Taken outside of a small market with a lot of red flags waving in the air, the photo was meant to display the festivity of the National Day. However, readers soon discovered that at the lower left corner of the photo, there was a slogan for quitting the CCP posted on a banister of a bicycle parking lot.

An advertisement agent of the Jinzhou Nightly told Hong Kong’s Mingpao that the next day authorities ordered the newspaper to stop publication on the ground of “violating advertisement laws” and that it was unclear when the newspaper could resume publication.

“Our newspaper did make a small mistake. But I cannot issue any comment to the public. I’m not sure about what had happened and I cannot answer your question. I’m busy working right now. Don’t call me anymore,“ said a person from the Editorial Department of the newspaper when he was contacted by The Epoch Times.

When asked if people could pay a lot of money to buy last Sunday’s Jinzhou Nightly, the Publication Department of the newspaper specifically indicated that the edition was no longer available.

The Advertisement Department of the newspaper declined to make any comment on the slogan for quitting the CCP and told the Epoch Times reporter to ask the Editorial Department.

Double standards exposed as network behind White House health care special refuses to air “partisan” ad critical of Obamacare

ABC, the network that completely turned over its news coverage to the government for an Obama healthcare special, has now refused to air an advertisement that is critical of nationalized health care, calling it “partisan”.

The ad, on behalf of the League of American Voters, argues the case that a government run system will ration health care, limit important medicines and surgeries for seniors and end Medicare.

“It tells the truth and it really highlights one of the biggest vulnerabilities and problems with this proposed legislation, which is it rations health care and disproportionately will decimate the quality of health care for seniors.” Bob Adams, executive director of League of American Voters told Fox News.

The ad has been running for a fortnight on local affiliates of ABC, NBC, FOX and CBS, with the latter also running it nationally.

While NBC says it will consider a revised version of the ad for national output, Disney owned ABC has flat refused to run the ad.

“The ABC Television Network has a long-standing policy that we do not sell time for advertising that presents a partisan position on a controversial public issue,” spokeswoman Susan Sewell said in a written statement. “Just to be clear, this is a policy for the entire network, not just ABC News.”

So, ABC does not sell time for partisan positions, however, the network has proven that it is happy to give programming time over to the government on the issue of healthcare.

How China’s Government Is Attempting To Control Chinese Media In America

The U.S. Census 2000 data reveal dramatic growth over the past ten years in the Chinese American population. In these years the Chinese-American community has increased by 48 percent to over 2.4 million, making it the largest Asian ethnic group in the country.

Notably, surveys have found that of this Chinese-American population, as many as 82.9 percent speak the Chinese language at home, with 60.4 percent professing that their English skills are limited (www.asianmediaguide.com). As one might expect, these people’s dependence on Chinese-language media is heavy. And to a significant degree it is these media, as made available in the United States, that determine the worldview of many Chinese-Americans living in the States. Depictions of the democratic process, the rule of law, human rights and other American concepts come to the Chinese-American filtered through Chinese-language media. The content and nature of Chinese-language media (hereafter “Chinese media”) in America thus deserves greater scrutiny.

Before 1985, Chinese media operations in the United States came primarily from Taiwan and Hong Kong, with little influence from Communist Mainland China. This would change in the mid 1980s, however, when waves of immigration from Mainland China changed the profile of the Chinese-American community. The influx of Mainland Chinese piqued concerns of state-run media operations back home, triggering what can now be described as aggressive media efforts in the United States by mainland operations. Indeed, the Mainland China government has made major inroads into the Chinese media market here over the past decade.

Four main tactics characterize the Chinese government’s effort to influence Chinese media in America. First is the attempt to directly control newspapers, television stations, and radio stations through complete ownership or owning major shares. Second is the government’s use of economic ties to influence independent media who have business relations with China. This leverage has had major effects on the contents of broadcasting and publishing, effectively removing all material deemed “unfavorable” by the Chinese government. Third is the purchasing of broadcast time and advertising space (or more) from existing independent media. Closely related to this is the government’s providing free, ready-to-go programming and contents. Fourth is the deployment of government personnel to work in independent media, achieving influence from within their ranks.

These tactics have been applied with much effect to both national- and local-level Chinese media throughout the United States.

New York Times may charge for website access

The New York Times Company is considering charging a fee for access to its website, and has begun asking its print edition subscribers how such a charge would affect their subscriptions.

In a survey targeting existing subscribers, the media company said it was “considering charging a monthly fee of five dollars to access its content, including all its articles, blogs and multimedia.”

The survey then asks: “How likely would you be to pay a 2.50 dollar monthly fee — which would be a 50 percent discount for home delivery subscribers — for continued, unlimited access to nytimes.com?”

At present, users can access all content on the nytimes.com website for free, but the company has experimented with access charges before.
